Beste mensen,
Vrede en alle Goeds.
Ik wil beginnen met een eerbetoon aan mijn goede vriend broeder Arnold Bosdriesz, broeder van Saint Louis in Oudenbosch. Hij belde mij afgelopen maandagavond op om in feite afscheid van mij te nemen. Het kaarsje is op. Hij is 92 jaar.

I want to start with a tribute to my good friend, Brother Arnold Bosdriesz, brother of Saint Louis in Oudenbosch. He called me on Monday night to basically say goodbye to me. The candle is finished. He is 92 years old.
Dinsdag ben ik naar Jerusalem geweest om met onze huisarts de volgende stap te bespreken voor de behandeling van mijn benen. Dat zal vermoedelijk in Haifa zijn, waar ik in oktober 2008 ook geopereerd werd. Dat zal dan in het ziekenhuis Benei Berit zijn.
Terug naar huis kon ik met mijn Filippijnse medebroeder Benny Baisas een bemoedigend gesprek hebben. Ik ken hem al vele jaren, toen hij op Sri Lanka zijn werk deed. Ik leerde hem in Rome kennen bij een conferentie. Nu gaat hij zijn leven als minderbroeder in Nazareth voortzetten. Hij vertelde van een indrukwekkend moment tijdens het pausbezoek aan de Filippijnen. Tijdens zijn ontmoeting met jongeren vertelde een meisje haar verhaal. Op een gegeven moment werd het haar teveel en begon zij te huilen. De paus ging naar haar toe en omhelsde haar langdurig net als de jongeman, die zijn verhaal deed.
Deze gebeurtenis doet mij denken aan het verhaal van Franciscus, die de
melaatse net buiten Assisi omhelsde, wat zijn moment van bekering was.
Maandag kwam Yihya op bezoek. Hij kwam te voet van zijn huis, omdat hij geen geld had de groepstaxi te nemen, wat zo’n 60 eurocent kost. Hij zou graag iedere dag willen komen om meer zich als een menselijk wezen te kunnen voelen, maar dat gaat niet. Hij zit klem door zijn familie als ongewenst kind.
Ook Shorouq kwam een paar keer buurten.
Donderdag kon ik naar de souvenirwinkel van John en Mike gaan om oude kranten te brengen, die zij kunnen gebruiken als verpakkingsmateriaal. Ik had met Mike een goed gesprek over de toestand in de wereld en de spelletjes, die gespeeld worden zoals in de Oekraïne. Een nadenkertje is de levering van wapens aan de regering. Hoe kunnen zij door het Oekraïnse leger gebruikt worden zonder training? Of zijn daar andere troepen aanwezig, contractors, die wel erin getraind zijn? En dan Rusland dit verwijten.
Die dag waren winkels en scholen gesloten vanwege de kou.
Ondertussen is het spannend wat er in de Oekraïne gaat gebeuren. Het rare in deze situatie is, dat een partij niet aan de besprekingen voor een staakt-het-vuren heeft deelgenomen, namelijk de zogeheten rebellen. Is Poetin dan zo machtig, dat hij de rebellen kan controleren?
Woensdagavond heeft hier flink gestormd en werd door de storm zand uit de woestijn aangevoerd. Normaal gebeurt dit in april.
Gisteravond gebeurde iets aardigs. Het bleek dat de TV geen beeld gaf. Dat was mij eerder van de week ook overkomen. Maar nu weet ik hoe met de afstandsbediening om te gaan om de zenders te krijgen. Zo kon ik in een oogwenk de zenders tevoorschijn halen tot vreugde van andere aanwezigen, broeders en aspiranten. Ook een manier om indruk te maken.

Back home I could have an encouraging conversation with my fellow Filipino friar Benny Baisas. I know him for many years when he did his work in Sri Lanka. I met him in Rome at a conference. Now he wants to continue his life as a friar in Nazareth. He told an impressive moment during the Pope’s visit to the Philippines. During his meeting with young people a girl told her story. At one time it was her too much and she began to cry. The Pope went to her and hugged her long, just like the young man who told his story.
This event reminds me of the story of Francis, who embraced a leper just outside Assisi, which was his moment of conversion.
Monday Yihya came to visit. He came on foot from his home because he had no money to take the group taxi, which costs about 60 euro cents. He would like to come every day to feel more like a human being, but he cannot. He is trapped by his family as unwished child.
Shorouq also came a few times to see me.
Thursday I was able to go to the gift shop of John and Mike to bring old newspapers, which they can use as packaging material. I had a good conversation with Mike about the situation in the world and the games that are played as in Ukraine. To think further is the supply of arms to the government. How can they be used by the Ukrainian army without training? Or are there other forces present, contractors, who are trained in it? And the blame Russia for it.

That day shops and schools were closed because of the cold weather.
Meanwhile, it is hard to say what will happen in the Ukraine. The strange thing in this situation is that a party has not participated in the negotiations for a cease-fire, namely the so-called rebels. Putin then is so powerful that he can control the rebels?
Wednesday night it was a very stormy weather and was led by the storm of sand from the desert. Normally this happens in April.
Last night something nice happened. It turned out that the TV did not work. That’s happened to me earlier in the week. But now I know how to deal with the remote control to get the channels. So I could in an instant bring up the stations to the delight of those present, brothers and aspirants. Also, a way to make an impression.
